We were contacted via our website to ask whether we could help with the recovery of a drone that had been lost in Papercourt Lake. The drone operator had the GPS marks for where the drone went into the water which should assist recovery. Having checked the site out for access, we contacted Papercourt Sailing Club, the owners of the lake, to ask permission to dive and try and recover the drone. They were happy for us to do so as long as we avoided the weekend as that’s when they sail. Conditions on the day were favourable; sunny and calm. In spite of the previous week’s heavy rain visibility was reasonable. Nick met up with the drone operator who sent up another drone to mark the spot where he believed the drone had gone in so it was a case of surface swimming out and descending when under the hovering drone. Depth was only around 3-4m but very silty and it took about 4 or 5 location attempts, and 20 minutes or so before he saw the curved edges of 2 corner propellers just above the silt, the rest of the drone completely buried. Total fluke or well trained search skills; we leave that you. One happy drone operator and one even happier diver.
